Women's Imaging Services
Flowers Hospital's Breast Health Center is dedicated to the screening and early diagnosis of breast cancer. Our Breast Health Center is accredited by the American College of Radiology as a Designated Comprehensive Breast Imaging Center and offers imaging services in a convenient, outpatient setting. Our services include 3D screening and diagnostic mammograms, breast MRIs, breast ultrasounds, breast needle biopsies and bone density scans.
Additionally, our center offers a modified breast health management program, led by a dedicated nurse practitioner, to create a personalized care plan for patients who receive a positive or abnormal result from a screening mammogram or who are determined to be at a high risk for developing breast cancer.
Mammography
A mammogram is a non-invasive X-ray of the breast used to screen for breast cancer or other abnormalities. Mammography can help detect breast cancer at its earliest stages when treatment can be most effective.
With digital breast tomosynthesis (3D) technology, multiple images are acquired of each breast from different angles and are reconstructed into a 3D image. This technology provides the radiologist with more information and greater image quality which often leads to improved accuracy and a reduced need for repeat imaging.
A screening mammogram is performed for women who do not have any signs or symptoms of breast cancer. Annual screening mammograms are recommended for women beginning at age 40. More frequent screening mammograms may be recommended for women who are at a higher risk for developing breast cancer. A referral or order from your provider is not required for a screening mammogram. Schedule your appointment online or call (334) 615-8480.
Schedule a Mammogram Online
A diagnostic mammogram is performed when a woman has a symptom of breast cancer, such as a lump in the breast, swelling in the breast, nipple discharge, skin or nipple changes, change in breast size or shape or pain in the breast. A diagnostic mammogram will also be performed for patients who receive abnormal results on a screening mammogram or who have a personal history of breast cancer. A referral or order from your provider is required for a diagnostic mammogram. Ask your provider to contact our scheduling department.
Breast MRI
A breast MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) uses a magnetic field and radio waves to create detailed, cross-sectional images of your breast. Because an MRI provides a clear view of internal tissue, it helps the radiologist diagnose possible breast cancer faster than with other technologies. Your doctor may recommend a breast MRI as an additional test if you receive abnormal results on your mammogram or to help determine the extent of breast cancer.
Breast Ultrasound
A breast ultrasound uses sound waves to create pictures of breast tissue and is used to evaluate abnormalities, such as a lump, that may be found on a mammogram or clinical exam.
Bone Density Scans
A bone density scan, also known as a DEXA scan, is a painless procedure that uses low-dose X-rays to measure the density of your bones. Bone density scans are used to track bone density over time and are a common method used for diagnosing osteoporosis.
Modified Breast Health Management
We understand that it can often be overwhelming when a patient receives abnormal results from a screening mammogram or when a patient is determined to be at an elevated risk of developing breast cancer due to family history or genetic testing. Our modified breast health management, led by a nurse practitioner, provides patients with clear communication and a personalized approach to determining the next steps in a patient’s plan of care. Our nurse practitioner works with onsite radiologists and other medical specialists to establish an appropriate plan of care, which may include additional imaging (such as a breast MRI), genetic testing or consultations with surgeons.
