Heartburn Surgery
Nissen fundoplication is a surgical procedure to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and hiatal hernia. In GERD it is usually performed when medical therapy has failed. The surgical procedure involves making tucks (plication) in the fundus of the stomach around the lower end of the esophagus. Performed with the robot, there may be a lower risk of esophageal tears (perforations), fewer complications and a more precise surgical approach.
Before you decide on surgery, discuss treatment options with your doctor. Understanding the risks and benefits of each treatment can help you make the best decision for your individual situation.
