DOTHAN, AL — Flowers Hospital became the first Dementia-Friendly Hospital in the Wiregrass after staff received specialized Dementia-Friendly Certification Training from the Southern Alabama Regional Council on Aging (SARCOA). The training from SARCOA educators aims to increase dementia awareness, improve patient experiences and boost staff confidence in caring for individuals with cognitive decline.
“We are proud to become the first Dementia-Friendly Hospital in the Wiregrass and are grateful to SARCOA for bringing this specialized training to our staff,” said Steve Gordon, Flowers Hospital chief executive officer. “This training helped our staff better understand the unique needs of those living with dementia so we can provide care with dignity, patience and support while they are in our facility.”
The four-day training from SARCOA included a virtual reality experience where attendees were able to see how someone with Alzheimer’s experiences a variety of common symptoms associated with the disease. Additionally, staff learned helpful ways to respond, approach and address patients with cognitive decline.
